Time Duration Calculator
Calculate the Time Between Two Times
Need to know how long something took? Our Time Duration Calculator makes it quick and easy to calculate the exact amount of time between a start time and an end time.
Simply enter your start and end times and the calculator will show the total duration in hours and minutes, as well as the total number of minutes.
The calculator also handles periods that cross midnight. So if you enter a start time of 10:00 PM and an end time of 2:00 AM, it correctly calculates the duration as 4 hours.
480 minutes in total

How to Calculate the Duration Between Two Times
Calculating the time between two points in the day is simple when the period stays within the same day, but it can be less straightforward when the end time falls after midnight.
Our Time Duration Calculator works out the elapsed time between your start and end times and gives you the result in both hours and minutes and total minutes.
How to use the calculator
- Enter the start time – Enter the time when the period began.
- Enter the end time – Enter the time when the period finished.
- Select Calculate Duration – The calculator will calculate the time between the two times.
- View your result – The total duration and total number of minutes will be displayed.
How is the duration calculated?
The calculator converts the start and end times into minutes and then calculates the difference between them.
For example, a period from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours, which is 480 minutes.
What if the time period crosses midnight?
The calculator also handles periods that continue into the following day.
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes that the end time is on the following day.
For example, a period from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM is calculated as 4 hours, or 240 minutes.
This is particularly useful for overnight shifts, events, travel, or any other activity that continues past midnight.
When might you use a Time Duration Calculator?
A time duration calculator can be useful for working out:
- How long you have worked
- The length of a meeting or appointment
- Travel or journey times
- How long an event lasted
- Shift lengths
- Study or revision time
- Project or task durations
- Time spent on a particular activity
- Overnight periods that cross midnight
Time Duration Calculator vs Working Hours Calculator
A Time Duration Calculator calculates the elapsed time between two times.
If you need to calculate actual working hours and deduct a lunch break or other unpaid breaks, a Working Hours Calculator is more appropriate.
For example, if you work from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a one-hour unpaid lunch break, the elapsed time is 8 hours, but your actual working time is 7 hours.
Important to remember
This calculator calculates the elapsed time between two times. It does not deduct breaks, calculate overtime, or account for different dates.
If your calculation involves breaks or working hours, use a calculator designed specifically for that purpose.
