How this Take Home Pay Calculator Works

Our Take Home Pay Calculator estimates your net pay after Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and student loan repayments. Enter your details and we calculate your estimated annual and monthly take-home pay based on current UK tax rules.

1. Gross Salary

How it is calculated

We start with your annual gross salary before any deductions. This is the amount you earn before Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions or student loan repayments are taken.

2. Income Tax

How it is calculated

Your Income Tax is calculated using your tax code and the current UK Income Tax bands. Most employees have a tax-free Personal Allowance before paying tax on their remaining income.

The calculator supports common tax codes including:

• 1257L (standard tax code)
• BR (basic rate tax)
• D0 (higher rate tax)
• D1 (additional rate tax)
• K codes

3. National Insurance

How it is calculated

National Insurance is calculated separately from Income Tax. Your contribution depends on your earnings and the current National Insurance thresholds.

4. Pension Contributions

How it is calculated

The calculator supports two common workplace pension arrangements:

Workplace Pension

Contributions are calculated using qualifying earnings and deducted from your pay.

Salary Sacrifice Pension

Your pension contribution is deducted before Income Tax and National Insurance calculations, which may reduce your taxable income.

5. Student Loan Repayments

How it is calculated

If you have a student loan, repayments are calculated using your selected repayment plan and income above the relevant repayment threshold.

The calculator supports:

• Plan 1
• Plan 2
• Plan 4
• Plan 5
• Postgraduate Loans

Please remember
This calculator provides an estimate only. Your actual payslip may differ depending on your individual circumstances, employer payroll settings, benefits, bonuses, tax adjustments and HMRC calculations

Frequently Asked Questions About Take-Home Pay

Find answers to common questions about take-home pay calculations, tax codes, pensions and student loan repayments.

What is take-home pay?

Take-home pay is the amount you receive after deductions have been taken from your gross salary.

These deductions can include Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and student loan repayments.

Why is my payslip different from this calculator?

This calculator provides an estimate based on the information you enter and current UK tax rules.

Your actual payslip may differ due to employer payroll settings, benefits, bonuses, tax adjustments, changes to your tax code or other deductions.

What tax code should I use?

Your tax code is provided by HMRC and determines how much tax-free allowance you receive.

Most employees use the standard tax code 1257L, but your code may differ depending on your personal circumstances.

This calculator also supports common tax codes including BR, D0, D1 and K codes.

What is the difference between workplace pension and salary sacrifice pension?

A workplace pension contribution is deducted through your employer's pension scheme.

A salary sacrifice pension reduces your gross salary before Income Tax and National Insurance are calculated, which may reduce your deductions.

Does this calculator include student loan repayments?

Yes. This calculator supports undergraduate repayment plans 1, 2, 4 and 5, as well as postgraduate loans.

Your repayment amount depends on your income and the repayment threshold for your selected plan.
