Mixed VAT Calculator

Calculate VAT across mixed-rate transactions.

Use our free Mixed VAT Calculator to work out the total VAT and effective VAT rate when a transaction, invoice or package contains items with different VAT rates. Add each item, enter its net amount and VAT rate, and the calculator will work out the VAT, gross amount and overall effective VAT rate for you.

Mixed VAT Calculator Calculate VAT totals for invoices, transactions or packages containing items with different VAT rates.

Line Items

Add each item’s net amount and VAT rate. Descriptions are optional.

This calculator works out VAT mathematically based on the figures and VAT rates you enter. It does not determine the correct VAT treatment of a particular product, service, package or transaction. For complex or mixed supplies, check the appropriate VAT treatment with HMRC or a qualified adviser.

What is a mixed VAT transaction?

A mixed VAT transaction is one where a bill, invoice or package contains different items that have different VAT rates.

For example, an event package could include several separate charges:

  • Room hire
  • Catering
  • Refreshments
  • Equipment hire
  • Other services or expenses

If those items have different VAT rates, simply applying one VAT percentage to the whole amount may not give you the correct mathematical result.

The Mixed VAT Calculator lets you enter each component separately so that the VAT can be calculated on the individual amounts before producing an overall total.

How to use the Mixed VAT Calculator

Add your items

Enter each item separately, including a description, net amount and applicable VAT rate.

For example, an event package might include room hire, lunch and refreshments, with different VAT treatment for each.

Enter the VAT rate

Select the appropriate VAT rate for each item. You can choose from the common VAT rates or enter a custom rate where required.

Add as many items as you need

Use Add Another Item to include additional charges. You can remove items you no longer need.

Calculate your totals

The calculator works out the VAT for each item before adding everything together to give you:

  • Total net amount
  • Total VAT
  • Total gross amount
  • Effective VAT rate

What is an effective VAT rate?

The effective VAT rate shows the overall VAT as a percentage of the total net amount.

It is particularly useful when several items with different VAT rates are combined into one total.

For example:

Total net: £1,700
Total VAT: £140
Total gross: £1,840

The effective VAT rate is:

£140 ÷ £1,700 × 100 = 8.24%

So although some of the individual items may have a 20% VAT rate and another may have 0%, the overall effective VAT rate across the transaction is 8.24%.

Why use an effective VAT rate?

An effective VAT rate can be useful when reviewing invoices, event packages, budgets and mixed charges.

It gives you a quick way to see the overall VAT being applied to a collection of items without losing sight of the individual VAT calculations.

For example, if you're checking an event package or comparing the figures on an invoice, the effective rate can provide a useful sense-check against the total VAT being charged.

How is the effective VAT rate calculated?

The calculator first works out the VAT on each individual item.

VAT = Net Amount × VAT Rate ÷ 100

It then adds the VAT amounts together.

Finally:

Effective VAT Rate = Total VAT ÷ Total Net Amount × 100

The result is the overall VAT rate for the transaction.

Important VAT information

The Mixed VAT Calculator performs mathematical calculations based on the figures and VAT rates you enter. It does not determine the correct VAT treatment of a particular product, service, package or transaction.

For complex transactions or mixed supplies, make sure you establish the correct VAT treatment before completing your VAT return.
