How to use the Markup Calculator
How does the Markup Calculator work?
Enter the cost of your product, service or item, followed by the selling price.
The calculator will then show you:
Profit
The difference between your selling price and your cost.
Markup
The percentage increase from your original cost to your selling price.
For example, if something costs £70 and you sell it for £100, your profit is £30.
Your markup is calculated as:
Profit ÷ Cost × 100
In this example:
£30 ÷ £70 × 100 = 42.86%
Simply enter your cost and selling price, then click Calculate to see your results.
How is Markup Calculated?
Markup is calculated based on the original cost of a product, service or item.
The formula is:
Markup % = (Selling Price − Cost) ÷ Cost × 100
Or, more simply:
Profit ÷ Cost × 100
For example, if an item costs £70 and sells for £100, the profit is £30.
The calculation would be:
£30 ÷ £70 × 100 = 42.86%
This means the selling price has been marked up by 42.86% of the original cost.
Markup vs Profit Margin
What is the difference between markup and profit margin?
Markup and profit margin are often confused because they both use the same profit figure, but they are calculated in different ways.
Markup shows profit as a percentage of the cost.
Profit margin shows profit as a percentage of the selling price or revenue.
For example, if an item costs £70 and sells for £100:
- Profit: £30
- Markup: 42.86%
- Profit Margin: 30%
So, although the figures are based on the same £30 profit, the percentage is different because markup is calculated using the cost, while profit margin is calculated using the selling price.
